What is a ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ (NOIM) form?
If you decide to use me as your celebrant, We must complete a Notice of Intended Marriage.
The form is a legal requirement for getting married in Australia. Part of the form needs to be completed by you and the other part by your authorised marriage celebrant. This can be done together at our meeting.
This must be done at least one month, and not more than 18 months, before your proposed marriage, unless a prescribed authority has agreed to shorten the notice period.
Identification is also required when filling out the form and this can be your
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Drivers licence
- Divorce papers ( if relevant )
- Death Certificate ( if relevant )
This form is sent by me to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages after your marriage is solemnized.

What documents and proof of identity do I need at this meeting?
You will need to provide a birth certificate and photo identification such as a passport or drivers licence at time of completing the Notice of Intention to Marry.
If you have previously been married, you will need to provide proof of divorce or death certificate.
Under Australian law, I am not permitted to perform your marriage until I have sighted your original documents.
What happens in the event that we have to postpone our wedding?
The Notice of Intended Marriage is valid for 18 months, I am only too happy to reschedule the wedding with you.
How do I change my name after the marriage ceremony?
On your wedding day, you will receive a certificate. This certificate is a keepsake document for your own records and may not be accepted as proof of marriage for official purposes, such as updating your driver licence, bank account or passport to your married name.
